Calm and tempest
French, La joie de lire, 2024
Two boys meet at the playground. It’s an ordinary scene that marks the beginning of many a childhood friendship… but neither of them has any idea what ordinary is. They both have complex family situations that they cope with using the same trick: a secret box in which they try to lock away the object of their torment. For Nino, it’s the storm that always seems to catch up with his funny, whimsical father. For Énée, it’s the overwhelming emptiness he feels at home when his mother’s smile suddenly disappears. Perhaps their friendship will enable them to find a balance between the emptiness and the storm… Their two stories can be read like mirrors in single tête-bêche volume.
