The Emperor in Exile

Jan Bachmann

German, Edition Moderne, Zurich, 2021

After his defeat in World War I, Emperor Wilhelm must go into hiding, and finds refuge from another friendly noble family. Robbed of his traditional imperial agency, Wilhelm quickly cuts down the forest which surrounds the property, meanwhile the hostess – with a keen grasp for the historical magnitude of the events – composes the work «Der Kaiser im Exil». In a manner typical of Jan Bachmann, «Der Kaiser im Exil» interweaves quotes, historical traditions, and completely fictitious additions to a passionate and critical parody of the arrogance of the (formerly) powerful.
