Strong Thing
German, Edition Moderne, Zurich, 2022
Inspired by the „Senntumsmalerei“ (peasant art), Lika Nüssli tells the story of her father’s childhood as a “Verdingbub,” a poor child laborer. In a touching cosmos of images and characters, untroubled childhood memories are merged with the harsh workday life and struggle for survival of the Toggenburg’s farming family and the raging war in the neighboring lands. Small instances of joy give the protagonist his lost childhood and freedom back. – Annette Gehrig, Director and curator, Cartoonmuseum Basel.
