Three Fathers
German, Edition Moderne, 2020
An autobiographical graphic novel about a blended family, stylistically brilliant and told in a lively way.
Nando von Arb writes from a child’s perspective about growing up with two sisters and a single mother who is stretched to the limit. She sees it as her duty to shield the children against everything and everyone. Three fathers go in and out of this house-hold: Nando’s biological father, who left his mother when the boy was two; Kiko, his sisters’ father; and Zelo, his mother’s partner. Young Nando has an individual, special bond with each of these three men. His relationship with his father is wistful, Kiko is more like a pal, and Zelo plays a supportive role.
