Ed Wige invents the backstory of an attempted runaway and recounts the everyday life in Switzerland of a girl who came with her mother from the former Yugoslavia. Surrounded by ‘Grüezi’ and ‘bitte schön’, the child grows up in the shadow of an absent father, who, due to the war, she sees on the daily news. Giving childhood a literary voice is always a challenge. The author confronts it with clever language, striking a balance between tenderness and violence, which comes across as extremely succinct and is therefore all the more remarkable. A small novel can sometimes be very big.
